Postal Department Honours Six Tamil Writers



Chennai: Department of Posts, Tamilnadu Circle, in association with South India Philatelists Association (SIPA), released special covers to honour six Tamil writers here on Friday.

The first set of the special covers on Pudhumaipithan, Va Ramaswamy and A K Chettiar were released by Postmaster General (Chennai City Region) Mervin Alexander and was received by BAPASI president Gandhi Kannadasan.

"Mervin Alexander has given us a lot of support by releasing special covers and honouring great writers," said Gandhi Kannadasan.

Postmaster General (Mails and BD) J T Venkateswarlu released the second set of special covers on T Janakiraman, Akilan and D Jayakanthan and writer S Ramakrishnan received them.

"On behalf of the Tamil writers’ fraternity, I thank Postal Department for honouring six writers. Writers are honoured across the world in different ways. However, writers here need more recognition," said Ramakrishnan.

He said of the six writers who were honoured, only Jayakanthan is alive today. On A K Chettiar, Ramakrishnan said, "He was the first to document the life of Mahatma Gandhi and he travelled wherever Gandhi went. Janakiraman introduced a new style to short stories," he said.

Gandhi Kannadasan said that BAPASI has planned to invite the kin of the writers and handover the special covers to them at the Chennai Book Fair, which is being held at Island Ground till 13 June.
