Centre allows Tamilnadu to conduct Jallikattu
Union Minister of State for Road Transport Pon. Radhakrishnan tweeted on Friday that the Centre has decided to allow the Tamil Nadu state government to conduct jallikattu, the popular bull taming sport played around the Pongal festival every year.
“Union Minister Prakash Javdekar called me now to give the good news that arrangements to conduct #Jallikattu in TN has been made,” tweeted Mr. Radhakrishnan. “I thanked him over phone. I thank our PM Shri Narendra Modi for facilitating this to happen. I thank everyone who supported #Jallikattu.”
Earlier, the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) had advised the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MEF&CC) not to overturn the Supreme Court judgment which currently bans jallikattu (bull races and bullfights) in the country. The Tamil Nadu government had also urged the Centre to introduce a bill to amend laws for its conduct.
