First Brain Dead Organ Donation Transplantation in Salem

The first brain dead organ donation and kidney transplantation was successfully done in Salem on February 3rd 2015 at Salem Gopi Hospital by a team of dedicated Doctors and Specialists. It would have not been possible without the support of the family members and relatives of the deceased Mr. M.S.Raju , 65 years of age , an ex-serviceman who unfortunately suffered a massive intracerebral bleed and eventually succumbed to it and was declared 'Brain dead' inspite of best efforts to save him.

The Doctors at Salem Gopi Hospital thank and deeply acknowlegded the kindness and generosity of the family members to donate the organs of their beloved. One of Mr. M.S. Raju's family members with tearful eyes recalls , "He has been helping people throughout his life. What can give you more satisfaction than being of help to others even after death?". This beautiful thought has given a new lease of life to four people and has brought back hope in their lives.
Two kidneys and two eyes were donated in the process out of which the first kidney was successfully transplanted in Salem Gopi Hospital, the other kidney was handed over to KMCH, Coimbatore. The eyes were given to Agarwal Eye hospital in Erode.
Though Tamil Nadu tops the list in Brain Dead organ donation in whole of India, this is the first of its kind in Salem District. According to health ministry, an estimated 5 lakh people die each year due to unavailability of organs. In Tamil Nadu alone , a total of 4397 patients have registered and are waiting endlessly for their desired organs.
The most common causes of brain death are road traffic accident, brain haemorrhage and stroke. Each brain dead patient can change the lives of 6-7 people for the better. The organs which can be harvested from a brain dead person are eyes, liver, heart, kidneys, lungs.
The need of the hour is to spread awareness and education with regard to organ donation. Organ donation is a gift anyone can give.
It has no cost and can be tremendously powerful.
"Donate organs,donate life".
